The Men’s Asia Cup began as a triangular ODI tournament in 1984. The entire tournament was played in Sharjah, which thereby became the first venue in an Associate Nation to host international cricket. Its women’s counterpart – also in ODI format – took off in 2004, as a bilateral series between India and Sri Lanka.

Over time, the men’s edition expanded to six teams. It oscillates between ODIs and T20Is, often based on the format in which the next limited-overs global tournament is played. The women’s edition permanently switched from ODIs to T20Is from 2012, and is now eight teams strong.
