Until 2023, South Africa had never fielded more than 25 different players in men’s Test cricket in a calendar year. And that count of 25, in 2004, was the only time they fielded more than 22.

In 2024, they exceeded that count by some distance when they fielded as many as 30. This is also the most Test cricketers any men’s side has fielded since 1988. The West Indies also had 30 Test cricketers in 2009, as had England in 2022.

South Africa played only 10 Test matches in 2024. Two of these were in New Zealand, where they sent a depleted side under a brand new captain once it overlapped with the SA20. Seven South Africans debuted on that tour.

The New Zealand contributed to the high number of players, as did three other debutants as well as the retirement of one of their great openers, early in the year.
