The Indian men's Test team played their first match in 1932, against England at Lord's. Their first-ever captain led in only four Tests, but holds the world record for the longest first-class career of any cricketer at 47 years, from 1916 to 1963.

Their newest captain is Shubman Gill, appointed in May 2025. For clarity, he is not included in this quiz as he is yet to play a Test match as captain. Two former captains retired from the format in the same month that Gill was appointed, and one of them is the player that has led India in the most Tests.

Two captains have led in over 50 matches, and another four in more than 40. The vast majority of these players are batters, but bowlers do find their spots here and there. Four Indian men have led in a solitary Test.
