The 2021-22 Ashes was the last time England toured Australia for a Test series. They didn’t have a fruitful result, losing the five-match series 0-4. Their most favourable outcome of the tour was a hard-fought draw in Sydney. Chasing 388 in the fourth innings, they lost their ninth wicket for 270 runs with the day's close approaching. England's two highest wicket-takers of all time, James Anderson and Stuart Broad, batted together for the final two overs to save the match.

England’s original squad for the 2021-22 Ashes featured 18 members. A backup wicketkeeper was called in as reinforcement ahead of the fifth Test due to injury concerns to the tourists’ designated first-choice and backup wicketkeepers. Overall, 16 squad members were used across the series, with three players – a batter, two all-rounders warming the bench.
England’s batters have let them down throughout the series, with only one individual century across the five Tests. Reflecting their woes, they haven’t won a Test in Australia in 14 years, with their last victory coming in Sydney in 2011.
