Since South Africa’s readmission, 17 players have led them in Test cricket. The list contains a cricketer who took over the duties in 2003 at the age of just 22 and continued to lead them till his retirement in 2014. He also holds the world record of playing the most number of matches (109) as a Test captain.

A unique feature of this list is a Titans player whose Test debut coincided with his captaincy debut in 2025. This occurred when South Africa sent a second-string squad to New Zealand, as their regulars were busy with the SA20. The all-rounder played both matches but hasn’t represented the team since.

Yet the most significant moment under a South African captain’s tenure came when they won the 2025 World Test Championship final at Lord’s, ending their 27-year ICC trophy drought. For a country with a history of racial divisions, his appointment and subsequent success have served as a unifying force. Remarkably, he is yet to lose a Test in his first ten matches, with nine wins and one draw, the best start by any captain in Test cricket history. He is currently nursing an injury suffered in the WTC title clash.

The latest addition to the list is a left-arm spinner who made his Test captaincy debut during the 2025 South Africa-Zimbabwe series, stepping in for their injured title-winning skipper.
