Russell was one of T20 cricket's early superstars, in his pomp capable of taking down any and all kinds of bowling as well as sending down four overs of quality seam bowling, often in the death overs.

He was one of the first set of players from the Caribbean that saw value in playing T20 franchise cricket across the globe, and was part of two T20 World Cup-winning sides in the mid-2010s. During this time, he also cemented his status as a legend of the IPL. Now retired from that competition, he holds a coaching role with one of his former teams. He is, however, still active in other leagues around the world.
