Over the first decade of the new millennium, the famed quintet of Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah were permanent fixtures in the Bangladesh XIs. All of them led Bangladesh in Test cricket.

On July 2, 2025, Bangladesh played an ODI against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. For the first time since September 4, 2005 – another match against Sri Lanka at Premadasa – they took field without any of Mortaza, Shakib, Tamim, Mushfiqur, and Mahmudullah in the XI.
