GF Grace was one of three brothers who debuted at The Oval in 1880, in the first ever Test match of English soil. WG scored a hundred in that Test and EM got a few runs, GF made the first pair in Test cricket history. However, he did have his moment during the Test.

In the Australian first innings, George Bonnor – an enormous man known for hitting big sixes – hit a ball in the air. As Bonnor and Harry Boyle continued to run, GF positioned himself perfectly in front of the gasometer. By the time he held the catch, the Bonnor and Boyle were already en route to their third run. The catch has subsequently been hailed as the “most famous deep catch in history”.

GF died three weeks after the Test match got over, but was immortalised by the catch. In later years, there have been several great names who have glamourised the often-ignored discipline of fielding. For decades, it was not uncommon for an aspiring cricketer to earn the nickname “Jonty” after a couple of special fielding efforts.
