In this quiz, you have to answer ten questions about some very young Test captains.

When England toured South Africa in 1888/89, two of their games were later given Test status. They won both Tests comfortably. C Aubrey Smith led them in the first of these, but missed the second, and Monty Bowden stepped in.

At 23 years 144 days, Bowden became the youngest to lead England. He was 148 days younger than Ivo Bligh, the winning captain in the first ever series contested for the Ashes, in 1882/83.

Like many of that era lured by the Gold Rush, Bowden stayed back in South Africa. That did not suit him. Bankrupt by April 1890, he travelled north, towards Rhodesia. He had a bout of fever, went into severe depression. A fake news of his death surfaced, but that was quickly debunked.

Unfortunately, it was not for long. He died at the Umtali Hospital. His death certificate mentioned epilepsy, but subsequent investigations cited “the fall from the post-cart, exhaustion, alcohol and sunstroke.” For a few days, his body had to be had to be protected from marauding lions in a coffin made from whisky cases. He was only 26. He never knew he was a Test captain.
