Scoring big was always difficult. However, batters could dig in and amass runs when losing ten wickets was the only way an innings could have ended. In an attempt to defend their wickets, batters could score big.

Limited-overs cricket introduced a second resource to the equation – overs. Teams need not be bowled out here: defensive bowling may reduce them to low totals. Big scoring naturally took time there (especially in T20), but it seems to have caught up as scoring rates went up astronomically over time.
