In his seminal book Next Man In: A Survey of Cricket Laws and Customs, Gerald Brodribb opened the chapter on leg before wicket with the words “no dismissal has produced so much argument as lbw”. Few would argue with that. The decisions used to split opinions, and continues to do so even after the advent of technology.

The mode of dismissal has undergone many tweaks over the years. The arrival of DRS has pushed cricket to do something unprecedented: batters can now be ruled out or not out LBW based on whether the ball would have hit the stumps (instead of something that had already occurred).
