For a long time, professional cricketers often had to take up day jobs to see them through the off-season and, more significantly, their post-retirement days. While most took up journalism, coaching, and administration – jobs related to cricket, in other words – some also took up occupations that had little to do with the sport.

There were enough medical professionals in the country, for example, for Marc Fiddon to pen Australian Cricket’s Doctors and Dentists. Ernie McCormick was a jeweller when he was commissioned to manufacture the Frank Worrell Trophy. MS Dhoni used to be a ticket collector for the Indian Railways. Shakib Al Hasan played for Bangladesh even after being elected an MP. John Wright released a country-blues-reggae album. Yograj Singh’s acting career has surpassed his stature as a Test cricketer. In 1996, commercial pilot Sunil Wettimuny flew the Sri Lankan squad and their recently won World Cup back home in 1996. And so on.
