Dennis Amiss scored the first and second hundreds in men’s ODIs. By the time he got his fourth ODI hundred, only Glenn Turner had two. However, as ODIs increased, so did hundreds. Throughout the 1990s, three West Indian giants competed with the top spot. Of the three, the youngest ended up holding the world record when he retired, in 1994.

An Indian legend went past him in 1998 and nearly trebled the world record count, scoring the last of his 49 hundreds in 2012. That record stood until the 2023 World Cup, when a compatriot with whom he had played together became the first to the milestone of 50 ODI hundreds. The younger man continues to score hundreds even as the format keeps contracting.
