The most outfield catches taken in a single Test innings is five. An Australian was the first to achieve the feat, against South Africa in Durban in 1936/37. He was the grandfather of the Chappell brothers – Ian, Greg, Trevor – all of whom later went on to represent Australia. Known for his all-round sporting abilities, he played baseball, tennis, lacrosse and basketball, swam competitively, and even became a cricket commentator after retiring.

Since then, the list has grown to 16, with an Australian becoming the only cricketer to achieve the feat twice, in 2018 and 2023. The latest entrant to the group is a South African who accomplished it during the second Test of their 2025/26 tour of India. Another South African had taken five catches in 2012.
