Batting first, England, riding on centuries from two top batters, declared their innings for 435-8 in the first session of Day 2. New Zealand had a disappointing outing, getting dismissed for 209, with a right-arm pacer top-scoring with a 73. Six batters scored in single digits.

England enforced a follow-on, but the Kiwis dug deep this time with their best batter scoring 132, while four others scored respective fifties. They ended their second innings on 483, setting England 258 to win. The visitors, with more than a day to chase down the total, fell just one run short in the end, handing the hosts a famous win.
