Cricket's traditional status as a summer, and daytime, sport began to shift in the second half of the 20th century as Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket pioneered a shift towards the possibility of cricket being played in the evenings, under floodlights.

The first official one-day international under lights came in 1979, soon after Packer had done the same for one-day and four-day matches ('Supertests'). Today, day/night one-day games are commonplace, as are night T20 matches.

The first official day/night Test match was played in November 2015 between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide, 21 years after floodlit first-class cricket was first trialled in the same country, during the Sheffield Shield. As of July 12, 2025, 26 day-night Tests (23 men's and three women's) have been completed, with the 27th set to get underway between West Indies and Australia in Kingston.
