For a long time, it was believed that the Ashes urn contained the ashes of cricket bails. Florence Morphy had burnt them, then packed the ashes inside the terracotta urn, which he gifted to England captain Ivo Bligh. The two later got married. However, in 1998, Morphy’s daughter-in-law confirmed that her mother-in-law had only burnt a veil of hers.

When the West Indies played a remarkable Test series in Australia, the local authorities commissioned a trophy named after touring captain Frank Worrell. After the series, Worrell himself handed over the trophy to winning captain Richie Benaud. When the West Indies toured England in 1963, Wisden – celebrating their centenary – announced a trophy for the winner of the series.

Until 2023/24, England and India played for the Pataudi Trophy when the series was played in England. For the contests in India, the winner lifted the Anthony de Mello Trophy. However, from the 2025 series in England, the two teams will be competing for the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy.
