For decades, boundary-hitting in Test cricket was dominated by fours. This can be explained by several factors. One, the bats were vastly inferior to their 21st-century counterparts. Two, before the advent (and spread) of limited-overs cricket, there was little incentive for batters to take unnecessary risks. Great batters still found ways to score quickly – but by hitting fours and running hard. There is also the factor that until 1910, they had to clear the stadium (and not the boundary) for six runs.
