Comparing bowlers across eras is not easy. The pitches were often extremely bowler-friendly in the pre-War era, but between the Wars the curators often overcompensated, leading to a deluge of runs. Wickets remain uncovered in the 1950s and 1960s. The late 1970s saw a surge in fast bowling, which continued until the end of the century. This was followed by a batting peak until the mid-2010s, before bowling averages again took a nosedive.

The bowling average and strike rate might have changed, but one number that has stood the test of time is the 20 wickets a team has to take. Wickets per Test for a bowler, thus, will never become irrelevant as a parameter. While not the outright most significant parameter, it reflects how important a bowler is to their team – for you have to take 20 wickets to win a Test match.
