As roles, bowling and keeping wicket are often perceived as mutually exclusive. At a basic level, that holds – for it is impossible to keep wicket to one’s own bowling in serious cricket.

However, some wicketkeepers have bowled over the course of their careers. In this, few have been as prolific as Derbyshire’s Bill Storer, who played six Test matches for England between 1896/97 and 1899. Across a 13-year first-class career, Storer had 17 hundreds, 376 catches, 55 stumpings, and – with his leg-breaks – 232 wickets.

While it is difficult to find a rival for Storer, some wicketkeepers have indeed resorted to bowling, mostly (but not necessarily) as part-time options.
