Some sources suggest that cricket might have had roots in the ancient Gaelic game of Katty (or Catty), a sport the Irish took with them when they travelled. There was been cricket in Ireland in at least the 1730s. From the second half of the 19th century, teams often took a detour of Ireland when they were on a tour of England.

Ireland sometimes won these games. The most famous of these came in 1969, when Alec O’Riordan (4-18) and Douglas Goodwin (5-6) bowled unchanged to bowl out the West Indians for 25 in 25.3 overs. The hosts declared on 125-8, the visitors finished on 78-4, and the Irish won on first-innings lead as per prior arrangement.

That remained Ireland’s most famous win until the 21st century, when both World Cups became inclusive enough to feature more teams. Ireland played more often against the major teams and won more. This week’s quiz will test you on the most famous of Ireland’s wins.
