In his seminal book Next Man In: A Survey of Cricket Laws and Customs, Gerald Brodribb opened the chapter on leg before wicket with the words “no dismissal has produced so much argument as lbw”. In Cricket and the Law: The Man in White Is Always Right, David Fraser added that “arguments about bias and incompetence in adjudication inform almost every discussion about lbw decisions.” Few would argue with these words. The decisions used to split opinions, and continues to do so even after the advent of technology.

The LBW has undergone many tweaks over the years. The arrival of DRS has pushed cricket to do something unprecedented: batters can now be ruled out or not out LBW based on whether the ball would have hit the stumps (instead of something that had already occurred).
