Afghanistan defeated Hong Kong in Match 1 of the Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday (September 9) - here's the updated Asia Cup points table after today's game.
Batting first in Abu Dhabi, Afghanistan posted a total of 188-6. However, they endured a torrid start losing Rahmanullah Gurbaz (8) and Ibrahim Zadran (1) cheaply. Their innings faced another minor crisis when they slipped from 77-2 to 95-4, after Kinchit Shah struck twice. Azamatullah Omarzai then provided late impetus blasting a 20-ball fifty – the fastest in T20Is for Afghanistan. Omarzai finished with 53 from just 21 balls, an innings studded with two fours and five sixes.
Hong Kong’s run chase never gained momentum as they slipped to 22-4 inside the powerplay. Babar Hayat, batting at No. 3, offered some resistance, but his efforts were in vain as Hong Kong finished at 94-9, succumbing to a 94-run defeat.
AFG vs HK: Updated Asia Cup 2025 points table after today's match
Afghanistan will be relieved to secure two important points in their tournament opener, especially after a demoralising 75-run loss to Pakistan just two days prior, where they were dismissed for a paltry 66 in the UAE tri-series final.
Following their impressive T20 World Cup semi-final appearance last year, Afghanistan have established themselves as giant-killers. Top teams will certainly not take them lightly. Their net run-rate has also received a huge boost of +4.700.
