Sri Lanka kick off Asia Cup campaign with comprehensive win
The last team to begin their campaign in this edition, Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka called correctly at the toss and elected to field. His bowlers got off to the perfect start, as Sri Lanka became the first team to start an innings with back-to-back wicket maidens against a Full Member team in men's T20I cricket.
Bangladesh were reduced to 11-3, 38-4 and 53-5 as Sri Lanka put the squeeze on. It was up to the sixth-wicket pair of Jaker Ali (41*) and Shamim Hossain (42*) to put on 86, and take Bangladesh to a respectable 139-5. Sri Lanka quick Dushmantha Chameera was the pick of the bowlers, returning 1-17 in his four overs.
The Lankans lost Kusal Mendis in the second over of their chase, but it was smooth sailing after that. Rookie No.3 Kamil Mishara started slowly, but broke the shackles with 6, 4, 4 off Shoriful Islam in the fifth over. Mishara and Pathum Nissanka put on 95 for the second wicket off just 52 balls, as the opener scored a 31-ball half-century. Nissanka, Kusal Perera and then Dasun Shanaka eventually departed in quick succession, but the match was more or less done by then as Sri Lanka got over the line with 32 balls to spare.
That has moved them to second in the Group B table, while Bangladesh slip to third. Sri Lanka will play Hong Kong next, on Monday, and Bangladesh will take on Afghanistan the following day.
