Asia Cup 2025 points table

Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan by six wickets in today's Asia Cup 2025 match, knocking them out in the process. Here's the updated Asia Cup points table after the SL vs AFG match.

Kusal and Kamindu Mendis ace tense run-chase for Sri Lanka

Batting first, Afghanistan were pegged back early by Nuwan Thushara's triple strike inside the powerplay. A second collapse saw them get reduced to 79-6. Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan then helped them recover, before Nabi's five sixes in the 20th over took Afghanistan to a commendable 169.

Sri Lanka lost the wickets of Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara in the powerplay, but Kusal Mendis anchored the innings at the other end. With Kusal Perera (28 off 20), he added 45 runs for the third wicket in six overs, taking Sri Lanka to 92-3 in 11.2. Captain Charith Asalanka played a brief cameo (17 off 12) at No.5, before Kamindu Mendis added came in and took the pressure off Kusal with a blistering knock.

Both Kusal (74 off 52) and Kamindu (26 off 13) remained unbeaten and saw off the chase with a 52-run partnership, with eight balls remaining.

SL vs AFG: Updated Asia Cup points table

Sri Lanka's victory took them to six points from their three Group B games and helped them qualify as the No.1 team from the group for the Super Fours. On the other hand, the defeat meant Afghanistan finished their three matches with just one win and were eliminated, while Bangladesh qualified with two wins from three, despite having a significantly worse net run rate than Afghanistan.

Only one more first round match remains - India vs Oman - to be played on Friday (September 19). However, the SL vs AFG match has already decided the Super Fours lineup, with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh set to face each other in the second round.
