Bangladesh open Asia Cup 2025 with comfortable win
Bangladesh beat Hong Kong with seven wickets and 14 balls in hand to kickstart their 2025 Asia Cup campaign. Chasing 144, they became 47-2 before captain Litton Kumar Das (59 in 39 balls) and Towhid Hridoy (35 not out in 36) added 95 for the second wicket.
By the time Ateeq Iqbal (2-14) dismissed Litton, it had been too late in the game. Litton was named the Player of the Match for his half-century. The win gave Bangladesh two points and a net run rate of +1.001: whether that is good enough will depend on how the other games pan out.
Earlier in the game, Hong Kong posted 143-7 after Litton won the toss and opted to field at Abu Dhabi. Hong Kong became 30-2 before wicketkeeper Zeeshan Ali (30 in 34 balls) and Nizakat Khan (42 in 40) put up a resistance of sorts. However, their 41-run stand came at a run a ball, which greatly reduced Hong Kong’s chances of putting up a big total. Captain Yasim Murtaza’s (28 in 19) late blows eventually took them to a competitive total.
For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed (2-38), Tanzim Hasan Sakib (2-21), and Rishad Hossain (2-31) claimed two wickets each, while Mahedi Hasan (4-0-28-0) and Mustafizur Rahman (4-0-22-0) ensured there were no easy runs.
It is worth a mention that this was Bangladesh’s first win against Hong Kong in men’s T20Is. In the other game, in the 2014 World Cup Qualifier, Hong Kong had beaten them at Chattogram with two wickets and two balls in hand.
