Pakistan eliminate the UAE and qualify for the Super Fours
There was a delay at Dubai after Pakistan initially refused to play the match in the aftermath of the HandshakeGate affair. Following an apology from match referee Andy Pycroft, the game finally began, but an hour after the scheduled time.
Pakistan posted 146-9 after Muhammad Waseem won the toss and opted to field. Early strikes from Junaid Siddique (4-18) reduced Pakistan to 9-2, but Fakhar Zaman (50 in 36 balls) and captain Salman Ali Agha (20 in 27) put on 61 to resurrect the innings.
Simranjeet Singh (3-26) then jolted Pakistan with three wickets in seven balls. At this point, Pakistan were 93-6 in 15.1 overs, and it was only due to Shaheen Shah Afridi’s (29 not out in 14 balls) that they put up a challenging total.
Shaheen (2-16) then struck early with the ball. Rahul Chopra (35 in 35 balls) and Dhruv Parashar (20 in 23) added 48 after coming together at 35-3, but the lower order caved in against Haris Rauf (2-19) and Abrar Ahmed (2-13). The UAE were bowled out for 105 in 17.1 overs. Shaheen was predictably named the Player of the Match.
From Group A, India and Pakistan have now qualified for the Super Fours. Two of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan will join them from Group B. Tonight’s match at Abu Dhabi, between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, which determine which two.
