Mitchell Starc has finally reached the summit of the ICC Test bowling rankings, becoming the No.1-ranked bowler for the first time in his career.
The landmark comes after his match-winning 10-wicket haul against Bangladesh in Mackay, where he returned figures of 6-12 and 4-39, including taking a five-for in just 22 balls in the first innings, as Australia won convincingly to draw the series.
The 36-year-old previously climbed as high as No.2, first reaching that position after the Boxing Day Test last year, but had never gone one step further before today. He jumped two spots and now has 872 rating points, leading Jasprit Bumrah by 10 points, with 872 points. It also ended Bumrah's spell at the top that he has held onto since November 2024.
Starc's latest rise adds another milestone to an already remarkable Test career. His six-wicket haul in Mackay took him past Dale Steyn's 439 wickets, making him the 10th-highest wicket-taker in Test history and the fifth-highest among fast bowlers.
He also became the most prolific left-arm bowler in Test history during the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, moving past Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath's 433 wickets. Starc now has 445 Test wickets.
For Starc, the No.1 ranking arrives 15 years after his Test debut in 2011, completing a wait that has lasted throughout a career in which he has established himself among the most fast bowlers the format has seen. He is also currently the leading wicket-taker in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, with 58 wickets from 10 Tests.
Harry Brook strengthens No.1 batting spot
Harry Brook continued his hold on No.1 in the Test batting rankings, extending his lead over England teammate Joe Root to 24 rating points. Rishabh Pant returned to the top 10 for the first time in a year, climbing six places to seventh after scores of 39 and 66 against Sri Lanka. Australia’s Cameron Green was another major mover, rising nine places to 21st.
