The first three Australians in the batting order all hit hundreds in the third ODI of the three-match series against South Africa, at Mackay.
South Africa had already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. In the last game, at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, the Australian openers blazed away to an incredible start, adding 250 in a mere 34.1 overs.
Keshav Maharaj dismissed Travis Head at that score, but not before the latter had slammed 142 in 103 balls with 17 fours and five sixes. Stand-in home captain Mitchell Marsh followed soon, for a 106-ball 100 with six fours and five sixes.
However, Australia did not slow down after that. Coming in at the fall of Head’s wicket, Cameron Green took only 47 balls to bring up his century: he finished unbeaten 118 not out in 55 balls, with six fours and eight sixes.
This was the fifth instance of three batters smashing hundreds in the same team innings in men’s ODIs and the second time that the first three in the batting line-up did it, after Hashim Amla, Rilee Rossouw, and AB de Villiers against the West Indies at Johannesburg in 2015. The South African instance was also the first time three batters scored hundreds in the same innings.
Top three all scoring hundreds in an ODI innings
No.1 | No.2 | No.3 | Team | Opposition | Venue | Year |
Hashim Amla 153*(142) | Rilee Rossouw 128(115) | AB de Villiers 149(44) | South Africa | West Indies | Johannesburg | 2015 |
Travis Head 142(103) | Mitchell Marsh 100(106) | Cameron Green 118*(55) | Australia | South Africa | Mackay | 2025 |
No.4 Alex Carey joined in the fun too, to remain unbeaten on a 37-ball 50 with seven fours to help Australia reach 431-2.
This was the second instance of a team innings including three hundreds and another fifty-plus score (from any batting position), after Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler, and Liam Livingstone against the Netherlands at Amstelveen in 2022. England posted 498-4 in that game, which still stands as the highest team total in ODIs.
