St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots inched past Barbados Tridents in the CPL, registering the fourth-highest chase in CPL history. The clash also recorded the fifth joint-most sixes in a CPL match (32).
A statement hundred from Quinton de Kock, an outrageous catch on the boundary by Navin Bidaisee, an excellent (if controversial) knock from Johnson Charles, and Andre Fletcher and Wanindu Hasaranga’s finishing touches highlighted the game between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Barbados Tridents at the Caribbean Premier League.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots secure a crucial win
De Kock’s 10th T20 hundred went in vain as the Patriots completed the chase to register their second victory in seven games. De Kock’s 106 came off just 57 deliveries, and included a 116-run stand with Zachary Carter (57) as the Tridents got to 217-4.
After conceding a boundary off the first ball of the 19th over, Naseem Shah bowled a low full-toss that de Kock sliced towards the deep cover boundary. Bidaisee ran to his left and grabbed the catch with both hands while being completely airborne.
A major controversy took shape in the fourth over during the chase, when Ramon Simmonds bowled a full-toss and Charles mistimed the shot. Sherfane Rutherford at deep square leg took a diving catch, and with no on-field signal, Charles began to walk back. He returned when the third umpire reversed the on-field decision, which led to Rutherford and Chris Green’s altercation with the on-field umpires. The free hit was soon smashed for a six to rub salt in Patriots’ wounds.
With 40 required off the last three overs, Daniel Sams scalped two wickets in the 18th, but also conceded 18 runs. Hasaranga and Fletcher bagged 18 off the 19th over as well. Fletcher ended with an unbeaten eight-ball 22, while Hasaranga took just four deliveries to get to 18.
With a win after three consecutive defeats (and an abandoned game against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons), the Patriots are fifth on the table, while the Tridents sit at rock-bottom after their third consecutive loss.
