Former Sri Lanka captain slams fastest CPL ton two days after ODI return

Days after his recall to Sri Lanka’s ODI squad for the England tour, Shanaka slammed the fastest hundred in the CPL, getting to the milestone in just 39 deliveries. The record was previously jointly held by Andre Russell, Tim Seifert and Shimron Hetmyer, all of whom got to the milestone in 40 deliveries each.

The Patriots batted first, and Shanala walked out at four in the tenth over with 89 runs on the board. He didn't take long to settle down, finding the fence with a couple of boundaries against Joshua Bishop in the 11th over, before taking Roston Chase to the cleaners in the 12th with two consecutive sixes. Even after losing Andre Fletcher, who slammed 64 off 38, and Jason Holder in successive overs, Shanaka continued his assault to bring up his fifty off 24 deliveries with a six in the 17th over.

The Sri Lanka all-rounder cut loose in the next, sending his national teammate Maheesh Theekshana for two sixes and a four. He then slammed two sixes off Matthew Forde's 19th over before taking 28 runs off the last over from Keon Gaston, featuring four sixes and a four, to jump from 93 to a 121* in a span of six deliveries and complete the fastest-ever CPL ton.

He finished with 121 not out off 43 balls, with eight fours and 12 sixes, and a strike-rate of 281.39.

Shanaka's 12 maximums are the joint-second-most sixes hit in an innings in the CPL, alongside Rahkeem Cornwall. Russell tops the list with 13 sixes in the same innings where he scored the then-fastest hundred (now second-fastest) in the CPL.

The Patriots then made a mockery of the Kings’ batting, skittling them for a mere 98, riding on a five-wicket haul from Jeremiah Louis to complete a 137-run win, the biggest win margin in CPL history. This record was previously held by the Trinbago Knight Riders, who registered a 133-run win over Barbados Royals in 2023.

The astounding victory took the Patriots’ net run-rate from -0.547 to 0.593, but they remained fifth with seven points. The Kings stayed fourth, but their NRR slipped to -0.888, and they are now just one point clear of the Patriots.
