Dom Sibley celebrates reaching a milestone during his County Championship triple century

Surrey broke the record for their highest score in the County Championship, scoring 820 runs in their first innings at The Oval against Durham, which included a triple hundred for Dom Sibley.

Sibley scores triple hundred; Curran, Lawrence, Jacks ton up

The new record eclipsed their previous best of 811 which was set in 1899 at The Oval against Somerset, and was surpassed shortly after Tea on day two of the fixture. Surrey ended day one on 407-3, after both Sibley and Sam Curran had scored centuries. Former England opener Sibley reached his double-hundred early on the morning of day two, with No.5 Dan Lawrence also reaching three figures during that session.

Lawrence ensured the run-rate remained healthy for the home side, and he and Sibley put on 334 runs for the fourth wicket. However, as Lawrence closed in on a double-century he smashed a ball straight to the substitute fielder in the ring, and had to depart for 178 off 149 balls.

Sibley, however, having surpassed his previous first-class best of 244, marched on towards his triple. He got there in the afternoon session, also becoming the leading run-scorer in this season of the County Championship, reaching 976 runs with his third three-figure score. Now batting with Jacks, the former England Test pair took Surrey past 700 as the Durham bowlers toiled with the Kookaburra ball in the afternoon sun.

Jacks became the fourth centurion of Surrey's innings, making a rapid hundred and hitting four sixes and eight fours before skying a ball in the air on 118 off 94 balls. That wasn't before, however, taking Surrey past their all-time Championship best and setting a 126-year high. Surrey's innings ended on 820-9 when Jacks' wicket went down, which is still short of the all-time Championship record for runs scored in a team innings, which stands at 887 by Yorkshire against Warwickshire in 1896.
