Former England opener Haseeb Hameed scored a double-century against Durham at Chester-le-Street today (May 16), continuing his run-scoring streak in the competition.
Opening the batting for Nottinghamshire, Hameed carried his bat through his side's first innings, reaching his double shortly before the close of play. He'd survived a brief collapse earlier in the day, when Notts went from 104-0 to 140-4 in the space of 14 overs.
Hameed stabalised the innings, however, and shared an 86-run partnership with South Africa Test batter Kyle Verreynne. He reached his century not long after Verreynne was dismissed by Codi Yusuf, getting to the milestone off 146 balls.
Despite wickets falling around him towards the end of the day, he managed to eke out enough partners to get to the double. Having stuck around for 94 balls, No.10 Brett Hutton was out with Hameed still needing another four runs to get to 200, leaving Mohammad Abbas to try and stay at the non-striker's end for Hameed. Having managed to get himself back on strike and having survived a tight lbw call, Hameed wasn't taking any chances, and powered George Drissell down the ground for a six. Abbas was caught at first slip an over later to end Notts' innings on 407, and leave Hameed unbeaten on 206 having carried his bat.
Hameed's innings brings his average after 10 innings this season to a 113.66. It's the second time he's crossed three figures in Nottinghamshire's campaign, having scored 138* against Warwickshire last month. It's also the fourth innings he's ended without being dismissed, explaining his high average. Nevertheless, he's also the leading run-scorer in Division One, on 682.
Having made his Test debut in 2016 aged 20, Hameed was regarded as one of England's most promising young batters. He played three Tests in his initial run in the side in India, making two half-centuries and sharing a 180-run stand with Alastair Cook in Rajkot, before a broken finger ruled him out of the rest of the series. He was beaten in the race to partner Cook the following summer by Keaton Jennings, and was released by his boyhood club Lancashire two years later. He joined Notts in 2020, and was made their captain last year.
On his return to the side in 2021, he played seven Tests making two half-centuries but also returning nine single-digit dismissals before he was dropped after the 2021/22 Ashes.
