Defending champions Surrey collapsed to 172 all-out in their first innings of the deciding clash of the County Championship against Nottinghamshire at The Oval today (September 16).
Having lost the only wicket of Dom Sibley - dismissed by Dillon Pennington the previous evening – nightwatcher Tom Lawes stepped out with captain Rory Burns at the start of play on day two. The pair brought up a 50 partnership before Lawes was out for 22.
At that point, in the first session of the day, Surrey were 101-2, and trailed Nottinghamshire by 130. However, the over after Lawes was dismissed, Burns also departed having been trapped lbw by Brett Hutton three runs short of a half-century. The wickets then snowballed, with the Test capped middle order trio of Ben Foakes, Dan Lawrence and Ollie Pope all falling in consecutive overs. After Ryan Patel was given lbw off the bowling of Josh Tongue, the tail folded, with Tom Curran dismissed in the following over before Gus Atkinson and Matthew Fisher were out within 10 balls of each other.
Before Lawes was dismissed, Surrey were 101-1, with their final nine wickets falling for 72 runs to leave them all-out for 173 and with a first innings deficit of 58. The wickets were shared around the Nottinghamshire pace attack, with Lyndon James and Tongue both taking three apiece, while Hutton and Pennington both took two.
The two sides went into this match split by a single point at the top of the table. Whichever goes on to win the match will have the upper hand going into the final round of matches next week. Surrey have won back-to-back titles for the last three years, while Nottinghamshire last lifted the trophy in 2010.

When they came out to begin their second innings in the afternoon session of day two, Surrey's bowlers struck back.
