Nottinghamshire secured their first County Championship title in 15 years at Trent Bridge today (September 25), with captain Haseeb Hameed leading the way with a century to put his side out of reach of chasers Surrey.
Haseeb Hameed leads Nottinghamshire to Championship title
Hameed scored the fourth century of his Championship campaign this year after Warwickshire were bowled out for 258. He struck 122 off 211 balls, taking his run-tally to 1,253 – only behind Dom Sibley in Division One. His innings came after Nottinghamshire were 57-2, having lost Ben Slater and Freddie McCann in back-to-back overs. Hameed built a 122-run partnership with Joe Clarke, before he was bowled by Nathan Gilchrist as part of a collapse which saw Nottinghamshire go from 179-2 to 218-5.
Haseeb Hameed: ‘I’ve still got ambitions to play for England - that will never change’
Having beaten defending Champions Surrey at the Oval last week, and with Surrey struggling against Hampshire, Nottinghamshire needed to reach 300 runs in their first innings to secure two bonus points to make their lead unreachable at the top of the table. Lyndon James' wicket for a 21-ball 9 put them at 248-6, before Liam Patterson-White and Kyle Verreynne struck up a partnership which took them well clear of the mark.
Verreynne stuck the runs which made Nottinghamshire county champions with a pulled six, celebrating with bat aloft and arms outstretched before embracing Patterson-White. As the crowd stood to applaud, the players waiting on the balcony celebrated a significant moment in the club's history.
Nottinghamshire finished eighth, one place off relegation, last season – Hameed's first as captain – having been promoted from Division Two in 2022. They were relegated in 2019 after not recording a win across the season. Their win this season also marks head coach Peter Moores' third Championship win with three different clubs. Moores won the Championship with Sussex in 2003 and Lancashire in 2011. Having joined the club in 2016, he signed a three-year contract extension during this season.
After being bowled out for 374, Nottinghamshire took three quick wickets before the close of play at Trent Bridge. Mohammad Abbas trapped both Rob Yates and Alex Davies lbw in his first four overs, before Brett Hutton dismissed Ethan Bamber before the close of play. Warwickshire finished on 7-3, trailing by 109 runs.
