Hampshire have signed Washington Sundar for their last two County Championship matches of the season.
Hampshire sign Washington Sundar in bid to avoid relegation
On Thursday, Hampshire announced the signing of the India all-rounder for their matches against Somerset and Surrey to close out the 2025 campaign. Sundar was part of the India Test side that drew 2-2 with England this summer. He starred with the bat and chipped in with the ball in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, scoring 284 runs and averaging 47, while taking seven wickets at 38.57.
This will be Sundar's second stint in county cricket, after he played in the Championship and the One-Day Cup for Lancashire in 2022. The 25-year-old is currently available to play after not being called up for the Duleep Trophy, or the India A team to take on Australia A at home later this month.
He is also the second Indian Hampshire have signed in 2025; fellow left-handed batter Tilak Varma played four Championship matches earlier in the season.
Hampshire were fifth in the Division One standings with 132 points, ahead of their ongoing fixture against Sussex. However, they were docked eight points earlier today for breaching the ECB's pitch regulations – pushing them down to eighth place and putting them in real danger of relegation, particularly with two tricky fixtures to come.

They were sent in on day one (September 8) against Sussex, and mustered 226 thanks to skipper Ben Brown's 71. Kyle Abbott (4-38) and Bjorn Fortuin (4-30) then helped skittle Sussex for 122 before it was the turn of Jaydev Unadkat (4-50) and James Coles (4-47) to knock Hampshire over for 173, and set Sussex 278 for victory. At lunch on day four, they were 37-1 in the chase.
