On his debut in the County Championship, for Surrey, Sai Kishore emerged triumphant in a duel against Jonny Bairstow.
At the North Marine Road Ground in Scarborough, Yorkshire had finished the first day on 282-4 with Bairstow on 19 after he had won the toss and opted to bat. The venue holds particular significance for Bairstow, whose father David’s ashes were scattered here.
Adam Lyth (47), Finlay Bean (57), James Wharton (78), and William Luxton (71) had all got runs as Sai Kishore spent his first day in the Championship without a wicket. Dan Worrall (3-67) had claimed three of the four wickets to fall, while Will Jacks got the other.
Only 24.1 overs of cricket were possible on the second day, over the course of which Sai Kishore (1-53) dismissed Bairstow (72 in 90 balls, 12 fours, one six) as Yorkshire stretched their score to 376-5. Matthew Revis (34) and Will Sutherland (6) were unbeaten at stumps.
Bairstow was involved in an intriguing duel with Sai Kishore over the brief course of play in the day. Sai Kishore produced a peach that beat the outside edge, but Bairstow responded with a violent slog sweep.
Then Sai Kishore tossed up a ball, and Bairstow came down the track in an attempt to clear mid-on. However, he miscued the shot, and Jacks ran backwards from mid-on and placed himself under the bat to take a well-judged catch.
Bairstow is expecting the birth of his second child. He may have to leave the game midway if his partner goes into labour before it gets over.
