Yuzvendra Chahal of Northamptonshire in delivery stride during Day One of the Rothesay County Championship division two match between Northamptonshire and Derbyshire at The County Ground on July 29, 2025 in Northampton, England

Discarded India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will miss Northamptonshire’s remaining three County Championship fixtures.

Chahal returned to Northamptonshire this season on a multi-format deal, having played four County Championship matches last year, picking up 19 wickets at an average of 21.10 including two five-wicket hauls. He also played a One-Day Cup match in which he took 5-14 in 10 overs, including five maidens.

Despite Northamptonshire having three more Championship matches left, Chahal will head home due to personal reasons. He played three times in that competition and six times in the One-Day Cup during his recent stint.

Chahal has taken 12 wickets at an average of 46.00 from three Championship matches in 2025. His last match was against Derbyshire at the end of July, where he picked up 6-118 – his career-best figures in the tournament. In the One-Day Cup, Chahal's wickets all came in the first three matches; he went wicketless in the last three. He finished the season with an average of 50.50 and an economy rate of 5.41.

Northamptonshire are seventh (one rung above the bottom) in Division Two of the 2025 Championship, with only two wins from 11 matches. They also finished last in Group B of the One-Day Cup with just one win from eight matches. However, they entered the semi-finals of the T20 Blast; Chahal was not part of their squad for that competition.

Chahal will miss Northants' next Championship matches – against Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, and Leicestershire from September 8 to 27.
