In the first game of the summer, he came in at one-drop against Northamptonshire at Northwood and hit 114 in 159 balls with 14 fours and a six to help Middlesex declare on 625-8 as Max Holden (151) and captain Leus du Plooy (105) also hit hundreds.

Ryan Higgins (4-51 and 3-54) and Noah Cornwell (3-48 and 2-63) then bowled out Northamptonshire for 261 and 257 to help their side win by an innings and 107 runs.

Kane Williamson scores second century in two innings for Middlesex

Williamson’s form spilled over into the next game, against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham. This time he came out at 54-2 after du Plooy won the toss and opted to bat. He added 63 with Joshua De Caires (58), 151 with du Plooy (57), and 55 with Higgins to put Middlesex in a dominant position.

Williamson had finished the rain-affected first day on 104. On the second morning, he stretched that to 153 before Todd Murphy had him caught by his captain and fellow Australian Cameron Bancroft.

This was only the second time that Williamson went past 150 in the County Championship, after his 189 for Yorkshire against Sussex at Scarborough in 2014. His tally of first-class hundreds now stands at 46.

At the time of writing, Middlesex were 419-8 with Luke Hollman (49) and Tom Helm (1) at the crease.
