Watch: Ben Foakes pulled off yet another spectacular catch behind the stumps today (May 16), backpedalling and diving full length to dismiss Jonny Tattersall in Surrey's County Championship match against Yorkshire.
Surrey were back on home turf at The Oval this week, and Foakes treated a bumper Day One crowd to another outrageous effort with the gloves.
Having taken the first two Yorkshire wickets in the morning session, Foakes ensured they didn't have to wait long after Lunch for the third. Bowling to Tattersall, Tom Lawes banged the ball into the pitch inviting a pull shot, which Tattersall duly attempted. However, instead of middling the ball into the leg side, the ball came off the edge of his bat and flew behind the wicket through the fine leg region.
Foakes, who was standing back to Lawes, quickly reacted, with his eyes fixed on the ball and running towards where a short fine leg position would have been. As the ball threatened to outstrip him and fall towards the ground, he put in a backwards dive with his left hand outstretched, catching the ball safely before hitting the turf at full stretch. He was quickly back on his feet and celebrating an unlikely wicket.
Foakes also put in an eye-catching performance behind the stumps last week, when he didn't concede a single bye out of Warwickshire's total of 655-5. He followed that up with 174 in Surrey's first innings, his 17th first-class century. Having last played for England on the 2024 tour of India, he is averaging 86.60 in the 2025 County Championship with the bat.
Yorkshire slipped into a tricky position at The Oval, where the game is without both side's tranche of England Test players. Yorkshire went to tea on 203-6, with Jonny Bairstow unbeaten and carrying their hopes with him.
