Watch: Yuzvendra Chahal followed up a long wicketless first innings with a ripper to dismiss Ekansh Singh during Northamptonshire's clash against Kent in the 2025 County Championship.
Electing to bat first, Kent put up 566-8 on the board in the first innings, batting out 155.5 overs. Chahal, playing his first match of the season for Northamptonshire, bowled a whopping 42 of those, but didn't manage to pick a wicket, registering figures of 0-129.
Northamptonshire then responded with an even massive score of 722-6, with four batters - Ricardo Vasconcelos, Calvin Harrison, Saif Zaib, and Justin Broad - scoring hundreds. Zaib was unbeaten on 196 when Northamptonshire declared at lunch on day four, hoping to get a fair crack at Kent in the second innings.
In a surprise move, they opened the bowling with Chahal, who took the second over of the innings after Liam Guthrie bowled the first. Opener Jaydyn Denly was cleaned up by Guthrie in the first over before Chahal struck in the eighth.
Looping a ball that drifted to pitch on leg stump, Chahal got it to rip sideways and beat No.3 Ekansh Singh's bat and crash into his off-stump, removing him for 27 off 24 balls. It was Chahal's first wicket of the match after bowling 45.3 overs.
At the time of writing, Kent were 77-3, trailing by 79 runs with a minimum of 27 overs remaining in the day's play.
