Jonny Bairstow bowls second over of professional career

Watch: Jonny Bairstow turned his arm over for the second time in his professional career in the dying moments of Yorkshire's County Championship fixture against Nottinghamshire today (June 25), ending an 11-year streak without a single over.

The run-fest at Trent Bridge was destined for a draw from the start of play on day four, after Yorkshire ended the previous evening still in their first innings of the game. The hosts scored 487 batting first – although no batter scored a century in their innings – before Yorkshire piled on 510. A double-century from Finlay Bean was the dominant feature of their innings, while Matthew Revis scored an unbeaten 93.

When Nottinghamshire finally came in to bat again, captain Haseeb Hameed was out for 38 before Ben Slater and Freddie McCann formed a 67-run partnership which took the match to its close. However, to inject some fun into an otherwise foregone conclusion, Bairstow – who was made Yorkshire captain for this season – came out of bowling retirement for the final over of the day.

Normally Yorkshire's first-choice keeper, Bairstow handed the gloves to Finlay Bean for the second innings, allowing him to turn his arm over. It's the first time in over a decade Bairstow has bowled in professional cricket – he last sent down an over in a 2014 County Championship game against Durham.

After moving the field to his liking, Bairstow spun the ball in his hands before faltering a couple of times in his run up, bowling right-arm tweakers. His over was safely negotiated by Slater and McCann, with the players immediately shaking hands afterwards to confirm the draw. Bairstow finished with figures of 0-6 off his one over.
