224* off 226: Rising England star slams career-best County Championship double-hundred

James Coles double century

James Coles smashed an unbeaten 226-ball 224 to help Sussex pile a massive lead in a County Championship match against Glamorgan.

James Coles hits maiden double ton

Spearheaded by Jaydev Unadkat (4-29), Sussex had bowled out Glamorgan for 155 on the first day at Hove after Tom Haines won the toss and opted to field. For the visitors, Ben Kellaway top-scored... and he made only 33.

Coles (72) joined Daniel Hughes at 143-3 on the second morning. At 289-6, it seemed Glamorgan might keep the lead to about 200, but Jack Carson (46) helped Coles put on 114 for the seventh wicket.

Coles accelerated once Carson fell to push the total to 521 as Tom Norton finished with 3-119. So dominant was Coles at the crease that his last three partners managed only 16 of the last 118 runs. He surpassed his previous highest score of 180, and eventually remained unbeaten on 224 off 226 balls, an innings that included 22 fours and 11 sixes. He equalled Murray Goodwin’s record for most sixes in a first-class innings for Sussex.

The youngest to play first-class cricket for Sussex, all-rounder Coles has grown in stature over the years. Earlier this year, he became the most expensive cricketer at the auction for The Hundred 2026.

At the time of writing, Glamorgan were 75-0 in their second innings with Zain-ul-Hassan (18) and Asa Tribe (40) at the crease.
