Ben Aitchison scored a maiden first-class century just a day after picking up a five-wicket haul in the County Championship.

Aitchison returned figures of 5-47 on the opening day and completed a maiden century in the format on the second day in Derbyshire’s ongoing county match against Middlesex. His all-round performance helped Derbyshire take a 199-run first-innings lead.
Captain Wayne Madsen put Middlesex into bat first at Lord’s, and in a day dominated by the bowlers, Aitchison trapped Max Holden, Leus du Plooy and Caleb Falconer leg before, and Zafar Gohar was dismissed caught at second slip. He then bowled Toby Roland-Jones to complete a five-for.

He was needed with the bat after Derbyshire went down to 90-4. With just over five overs left in the day, he came on as a night-watcher to hold on until stumps. Nick Potts, who also remained unbeaten overnight, fell in the tenth over of the second day, with Derbyshire at 135, when Madsen joined Aitchison in the middle.
The duo resurrected the innings, taking the side past Middlesex’s first-innings total, while also completing respective hundreds – Madsen’s 44th in first-class cricket and Aitchison’s first. They added 208 runs for the sixth wicket, with the seamer the first to fall for 112 off 157, which included 14 boundaries.
Madsen scored 119 and was the eighth wicket to fall, with Derbyshire getting bowled out for 376. Ryan Higgins took two wickets for the home side, while Eathan Bosch took three.
