Glamorgan seamer Ryan Hadley produced an all-timer batting effort as a night-watcher to help his side secure a narrow County Championship win over Somerset in Cardiff.

Australian seamer Ryan Hadley stars with the bat for Glamorgan

Sent at No.6 when Glamorgan fell to 133-4 in the dying stages of the third day in a 283-run chase, Hadley held on for 231 deliveries, nearly as many as he had played in his entire first-class career before today (250), to take them home. In the process, he completed his first-ever fifty in the format, having previously scored just 52 runs in 19 innings at 5.8.

Somerset were bowled out for 354 after being put into bat first. Joshua Thomas (71) and Tom Abell (86) starred with the bat for visitors, while Tom Norton returned figures of 3-75. In reply, only Ben Kallaway scored more than 50 for Glamorgan with a 59, but found little help from others as they conceded a 125-run lead.

But Somerset returned to bat in the final session on day three and were blown away by Norton, who took four wickets, while Hadley took two, to reduce them to 32-6 by the end of day’s play. Abell (71) and Lewis Gregory (45) together added crucial 64 runs for the ninth wicket to set a 283-run target for Glamorgan to chase.

Asa Tribe and Zain-ul-Hassan provided a stable start, but they lost wickets in clusters, going from 81-0 to 91-2, and from 127-2 to 134-5, triggered by Craig Overton and Migael Pretorius. Hadley and Sean Dickson (76) then batted more than 55 overs together to add 114 runs for the sixth wicket before the latter fell when the team were just 35 short of the target.
