Left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White picked up 6-43 during Nottinghamshire's 2026 County Championship clash against Essex today (June 19) at Chelmsford.

Patterson-White’s first wicket came in the 30th over of the innings, when he sent back Essex skipper Tom Westley for 44 with the score reading 87-3 at that point. Essex, the Division One table-toppers at the start of the round, then lost their next five wickets for 46 runs, with Patterson-White picking up three of those wickets.

A brief resistance between Charlie Bennett (21) and Shane Snater (31) followed, before Patterson-White returned to dismiss the duo in the space of 12 balls. Essex were bowled out for 184, with the 27-year-old picking up 6-43 in 16.4 overs, to further his claim for England selection. Nottinghamshire, the Division One champions, are looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season last week.

Who is Liam Patterson-White?

Patterson-White made his red-ball debut in 2019, picking up 171 wickets in 111 innings thus far. He has made an excellent start to the 2026 county season, with 29 wickets from 13 innings at an average of 23.89 and two five-fors. He was also picked for the Lions squad earlier this summer against South Africa A.

Former England batter Mark Butcher named him as one of the leading candidates to fill England's spin vacancy, alongside Sussex off-spinner Jack Carson. England are still searching for a settled spin option after Shoaib Bashir's struggles and the continued use of part-time alternatives such as Will Jacks, while Rehan Ahmed remains on the fringes of the Test side. Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly,Butcher said the Lions call-up was potentially his first step towards an entry into the senior side.

“He's 27 years old. He's considerably more experienced, both in terms of caps and age, than pretty much the rest. And they're taking a look at him in an England environment. The main dressing room and the A-team dressing room are not too far apart in terms of communication. More than perhaps in any other era, it's a real pathway into the England dressing room. So they're taking a look at him to see what he can do. They know what he can do on the park, but they're obviously trying to figure out what sort of character he is and whether he'll be able to cope with the demands and scrutiny of international cricket. They're giving him a whirl.”
