Hasan Mahmud returned career-best first-class figures on his County Championship debut for Kent.
Hasan Mahmud registers career-best innings and match figures on county debut
Mahmud became only the second Bangladesh player to feature in the County Championship after Shakib Al Hasan when he signed for Kent on June 9. He was drafted straight into the XI for the Division Two game against Lancashire, and starred in a 140-run win.
Batting first in Blackpool, Kent were bowled out for 178, with Liam Livingstone, making his first FC appearance since his Test debut in 2022, picking up a five-wicket haul. Keith Dudgeon starred with the ball for Kent, registering his 13th five-for in the format, to finish with 6-21 as Lancashire were bowled out for 87.
Mahmud, bowling first change, took three wickets for 32 runs, accounting for the wickets of Marcus Harris, Livingstone and Joseph Moores. Chris Benjamin’s third first-class century and Harry Finch’s 83 put Kent in a strong position to close out the game, as they posted a 424-run target for Lancashire to chase.
Mahmud punctured their pursuit, dismissing Harry Singh and Josh Bohannon in his first spell before returning to break a 104-run stand between Keaton Jennings and Harris by having the former caught behind. He broke another strong partnership, going through Livingstone’s defence before having Moores caught behind just two deliveries later to complete his fourth five-wicket haul in the format.
George Balderson was his sixth victim as he finished with 6-69, his career-best innings figures in first-class cricket, and registered match figures of 9-101, also a career-best.
The right-arm quick had made his international debut in 2020, lining up for Bangladesh in a T20I against Zimbabwe. He had to wait nearly a year for his second international appearance, playing two home ODIs against the West Indies. His Test bow came in 2024, following which he also became the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take a five-wicket haul in India.
Overall, Mahmud has played 13 Tests, 26 ODIs and T20Is for Bangladesh, taking 36, 33 and 28 wickets in the formats, respectively. His last international appearance came in the first Test of a two-match series against Ireland in November 2025 in Sylhet.
