Jake Weatherald has joined Leicestershire for the 2026 County Championship.

The club announced Weatherald's signing on Monday (March 30). The opening batter, who made his Test debut during the Ashes series just gone, will join Leicestershire for the first block of Championship games in April and May.
Weatherald's five Tests have yielded 201 runs so far, with one half-century. In a first-class career spanning over 10 years now, he has amassed 5,784 runs to go with 1,602 List A runs and 2,324 T20 runs.
"I’m absolutely buzzing to join Leicestershire for this first block of the County Championship," Weatherald said in a statement released by the club. "It’s my first taste of county cricket, and honestly, I couldn’t be more excited. Everyone I’ve spoken to has talked about how special the county circuit is — the history, the crowds, the grind — and I’m really looking forward to being part of that. I can’t wait to meet the lads, settle in, and hopefully make a real impact for the Foxes."

Head coach Alfonso Thomas added, "We’re thrilled to have Jake with us for the opening block of the Championship. He’s had a brilliant few years and showed during the Ashes that he can perform on the biggest stage. We believe he’ll slot straight into the group and make a strong impact on and off the field."
Leicestershire announced on Sunday that they would be missing the services of one of Weatherald's countrymen, club captain Peter Handscomb, for personal reasons. Handscomb led them to promotion from Division Two last year, and has signed a contract extension through to 2027. All-rounder Ian Holland, who has 21 international caps for the USA, will lead in his absence.
Leicestershire begin their campaign on April 3, hosting Sussex at Grace Road.
