Jhye Richardson was expensive for Yorkshire on the opening day of their County Championship match against Sussex.
Richardson gets unwanted hundred to continue disappointing county start
The Australia pacer conceded 105 runs in 16 overs on the first day of the match without picking up a wicket. This comes after he was subbed out under the ECB’s new replacement trials in Yorkshire’s last game against Hampshire, due to a food poisoning bout. He had already bowled 12 overs in the match, picking up one wicket for 51 runs before Logan van Beek replaced him.
Richardson took the new ball for Yorkshire and was instantly put to the test by Tom Haines, who hit him for a four each in his first three overs, before scoring three boundaries in the fourth over of his spell. He was subsequently taken off the attack, but the second spell was equally expensive, conceding nine, five and 13 runs, respectively, in his first three overs back into the attack.
A change of ends didn’t help much as he continued to concede boundaries, even in his last spell of the day, in which he leaked 14 runs in three overs. He ultimately conceded 105 runs in 16 overs by stumps on day one.

After a draw and a defeat in the first two games of the season, Yorkshire opted to bowl first in Leeds against Sussex. Jack White got both Daniel Hughes and Tom Clark on consecutive deliveries, but Haines’ 64 kept the side on course for a strong first-innings total. He fell after a 50-run stand with James Coles, who fell three short of a fifty.
George Hill then dismissed Coles and Jack Leaning in back-to-back overs to reduce Sussex to 150-5, but John Simpson and Tom Price dug deep, adding 165 runs for the sixth wicket. Price fell seven short of a second first-class century.
