Middlesex forfeited their first innings after bowling Derbyshire out for 131 in the County Championship to try and force a result.
Why did Middlesex forfeit their innings?
Middlesex, who are placed fifth on the points table after nine games, forfeited their first innings to give themselves a chance to secure victory on the last day of the match. The first and third days of the clash were washed out due to persistent rain, while only 32.3 overs were bowled on the second.
Derbyshire, starting from their Day 2 score of 70-3, lost seven wickets on the fourth day for just 61 runs to be bowled out for 131, following which Middlesex forfeited their first innings and sent Derbyshire into bat again. The forfeiture gave Middlesex the chance to bowl Derbsyhire out and try to chase down the target in their second innings, if time permits. At the time of writing, Derbyshire were 111-3, leading by 242 runs, with match stopped due to bad light.

They lead by their first innings score of 113.
As per clause 15.2 & 15.3 of the MCC Laws of the game, “a captain may forfeit either of his/her side's innings at any time before the commencement of that innings. A forfeited innings shall be considered a completed innings. A captain shall notify the opposing captain and the umpires of any decision to declare or to forfeit an innings. Once notified, the decision cannot be changed.”
Notably, both the teams are not in the promotion race. Middlesex are currently fifth in the table with 105 points, while Derbyshire are a close sixth with 102. In case of a draw, both teams land eight points automatically, while a win would give them 18. In addition, Middlesex will also secure a three-point bonus for dismissing Derbyshire inside 110 overs (49.5) in the first innings. Derbyshire, on the other hand, don’t get any bonus points as they were bundled out for 131 (less than 250).
Middlesex will lock horns with Lancashire next, while Derbyshire are set to face Gloucestershire.
